HRD held its annual meeting at The Highland Center in Monterey on Sunday 8 October 2006. About 40 people attended and heard reports on the past years activities and future plans. Click here for a full report.
Highlanders for Responsible Development in partnership with Lightstone Foundation held a beginners beekeeping workshop on 13 May 2006 at the Lightstone Foundation Community Center. The one-day workshop consisted of four sessions including socialization of a bee colony, beekeeping equipment required and assembly of equipment, a hands-on session of working with bees in a hive, and information on how to keep a bee colony healthy and active.
Paul Poling of the West Virginia Department of Agriculture led the workshop. A beekeeper for 25 years, Poling has 600 hives in production for his company, Mountain State Honey. Keith Tignor, who assisted with the workshop, is the State Apiarist for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He has worked at Virginia Tech, managing the Universitys apiaries, conducting research on honey bee pests, and working with the teaching and extension programs.
HRD sponsored a workshop by Joel Salatin, renowned organic farm expert, on 21 February 2006 at the Highland County Public Library in Monterey. The title of the talk was How to Make Money Farming. The evening was informative as well as highly entertaining. Refreshments were served. Joel is the author of several books, all of which are available at the library. HRD held its first annual meeting on Saturday 17 September 2005 at the Highland Center in Monterey, 5 to 8 p.m. Charlotte Stephenson made a short statement regarding the future goals and opportunities to volunteer in community efforts for citizen involvement. Following the meeting was a time for fellowship and a potluck supper. About 100 people attended. An article and photo appeared in The Recorder on 23 September, p. 5.
H R D presented an informational display on wind energy and the possible impacts on Highland County at the 2005 Maple Festival. Read a report on this event.
The Virginia Conservation Network sponsored a Lobby Day on 17 January 2005 to encourage people to meet with their representatives and lobby for conservation issues. Several HRD representatives participated in this event. Read the complete report.
